MIOC Intelligence Analysis
🔥 Tanker Attacks Spread Beyond the Strait
•On 7 Oct an unnamed tanker was struck by multiple projectiles 51 nm from Madinat ash Shamal, Qatar, per UKMTO. It is the first attack outside the Hormuz area since a VLCC was hit in Iraqi waters on 9 Sep.
•A further tanker was reported struck and on fire east of Fujairah on 8 Oct, the first hit in that area in six months.
•UKMTO has logged 16 attacks on merchant ships in the Gulf over the past 10 days. MIOC has confirmed 12 of the vessels: all were transiting dark via the southern corridor, and 11 were tankers.
•The confirmed vessels include several VLCCs, an LPG tanker and an LNG carrier. An Aframax tanker struck on 6 Oct had 12 Indian seafarers injured.
•There are reports of tankers turning back mid-transit after being hailed by the IRGC.
▸MIOC assessment: the westward spread likely extends risk to the GCC terminals and anchorages where tankers stage for southern-corridor transits.
⚓ Fujairah SPM Loading Thin After Nearby Strike
•On 7 Oct only one of Fujairah’s four single-point moorings had a VLCC loading, a Libya-flagged tanker.
•The tanker reported struck on 8 Oct was about 10 nm from the SPM area.
🔶 Hormuz Crude Outflow Doubles to 11.1m bbl (7 Oct)
•Total crude outbound through Hormuz was 11.13m bbl on 7 Oct, up from 4.73m on 6 Oct and back above the 9.76m seven-day average after two days below it.
•Ship-to-ship transfers drove the move, rising from 1m to 9.09m bbl across five of six crossings, while terminal loading fell from 3.73m to 2.04m bbl.
•Saudi Arabia returned at 3.92m bbl after two days absent, alongside Iraq at 3.01m and Kuwait at 2.16m bbl. Every barrel carried a named grade.
Middle East Gulf crude outflow by source country, 23 Sep to 7 Oct 2026
Middle East Gulf crude outflow by source country, terminal vs. STS · 23 Sep–7 Oct 2026 (Windward and Vortexa data)
🔶 VLCC Tonnage Scarcity Drives Record Freight
•A lump-sum VLCC fixture from the Red Sea to South Korea was reported at $73.9m, about $37/bbl, against roughly $50m a week earlier.
•The benchmark Saudi–China VLCC rate has passed $1.3m per day. Freight now makes up 25–30% of the delivered cost of Gulf crude, against 1–3% normally.
•A second-hand VLCC sold for a record of about $200m, against roughly $130m for a newbuild, and major traders are buying their own tonnage.
•VLCCs are concentrated east of Suez, leaving the Atlantic basin short of ships for charter.
▸MIOC assessment: the market is likely pricing in at least six to nine more months of disruption while Gulf producers build alternative export routes.
