⚡ Bottom Line Up Front
01
Hormuz Crossings Dip to Seven
7 vessels crossed the Strait on 2 November, 5 inbound and 2 outbound, down from 8 on 1 November. One ~333 m crude tanker crossed inbound dark, and one AIS-visible tanker crossed outbound.
02
Tankers Wait at UAE Anchorages
AIS-visible tanker crossings fell 30% from September to 1–26 October, while dry cargo crossings rose 64%. Off Fujairah, 17 likely-empty crude tankers, eight of them VLCCs, have room for about 25M bbl.
03
Iran's Visible Crude Loadings Stall
No AIS-transmitting Iran-linked tanker in the Gulf has shown a loading draft change since 17 September, despite ~24M bbl of empty capacity. 24 Sentinel-2 passes over Kharg Island found no dark tanker at its loading terminals.
04
Pirates Seize Iranian Fishing Dhow off Somalia
A 12-man pirate group hijacked an Iran-flagged fishing dhow about 185 NM east of Bandarbeyla on 29 October. The Indian Navy freed the vessel and crew on 2 November, the fourth confirmed fishing-vessel hijacking off Somalia in 2026.

MIOC Intelligence Analysis
🌊 Tankers Hold at UAE Anchorages as Dry Cargo Crossings Climb
•AIS-visible dry cargo crossings of Hormuz rose 64%, from 33 in September to 54 over 1–26 October. AIS-visible tanker crossings fell 30%, from 33 to 23.
•Outbound AIS-visible tankers dropped 68%, from 19 to six. Over 27 October–1 November, 25 dry cargo ships crossed outbound against three tankers, none of them crude.
•Sentinel-2 imagery on 26 October showed at least 171 stationary vessels of 50 m or longer off Fujairah and Khor Fakkan, against 136 on AIS. At least 35 were likely dark.
▸MIOC assessment: 17 crude tankers off Fujairah, including eight VLCCs, are likely empty. They will likely keep waiting at anchor for a lull in attacks rather than risk a transit.
Average ships at 22 UAE anchorages and AIS-visible Hormuz crossings, September vs October 2026
UAE anchorage counts and AIS-visible Hormuz crossings, September vs 1–26 October 2026. Source: Windward AIS, Copernicus Sentinel-2.
🔶 Iran's AIS-Visible Tankers Show No Loading Since 17 September
•Windward data shows 47 Iran-linked tankers in the Gulf, of which 25 broadcast AIS. Of those 25, 15 are in ballast (11 VLCCs) with ~24M bbl of capacity, and nine are laden with about 11M bbl.
•Automated detection on 24 Sentinel-2 passes over Kharg Island from 18 September to 1 November found no dark tanker at either loading terminal.
•Outside the Gulf, 115 of 140 AIS-broadcasting Iran-linked tankers are in ballast. About 5.9M bbl of the 9.6M bbl laden is in transit toward China aboard five tankers.
▸MIOC assessment: the crude is likely going into onshore tanks at Kharg, loading dark between passes, or staying in the ground through output cuts. Cuts would be Iran's worst case.

🔥 Iranian Fishing Dhow Hijacked off Somalia, Freed by Indian Navy
•On 29 October, 12 armed pirates hijacked an Iran-flagged fishing dhow with 21 Iranian crew about 185 NM east of Bandarbeyla, Puntland. The Indian Navy freed it on 2 November.
•It is the first confirmed hijacking of the fourth quarter and the fourth confirmed hijacking of a dhow or fishing vessel off Somalia in 2026.
▸MIOC assessment: dhow seizures are likely underreported, since many Iranian dhows there operate off AIS with no IMO number. Pirates likely use them as motherships to reach shipping lanes.
